In this Girls That Create podcast episode, Erin engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Chelsey Goodan, author of the new book Underestimated: The Wisdom and Power of Teenage Girls. Goodan highlights the importance of empowering young girls to discover their unique identities. She urges parents to engage in conversations with their daughters, asking them about their passions and interests, which fosters an environment where they can freely express their thoughts, emotions, and ideas.

According to Goodan, it is crucial to establish safe spaces for girls to explore new activities, even if they initially struggle with them. She emphasizes the value of trying things that may not come naturally, as it can contribute to personal growth. By creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages exploration and curiosity, parents and caregivers can assist their daughters in finding their own paths and developing self-assurance.

The conversation also touches on the impact of media representation and how it can shape a girl’s perception of herself and her potential. Goodan strongly believes girls need to see a diverse range of characters in the media, characters that look like them and represent a variety of interests, skills, and careers.
