Raising LGBTQIA+ Children with Love and Acceptance | Telaina Eriksen on the Girls That Create Podcast

In today’s world, parents and caregivers must provide a safe and supportive environment for children who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. In this episode of the Girls That Create podcast, host Erin Prather Stafford talks with Telaina Eriksen, the author of Unconditional: A Guide to Loving and Supporting Your LGBTQ Child. She shares her wisdom on raising LGBTQIA+ children with love and acceptance.

Listen to the full interview on Word of Mom Radio.

Eriksen emphasizes the importance of supporting children during vulnerable moments, such as when they come out. Parents and caregivers must create a space where children feel safe and loved, allowing them to express their true selves without fear of judgment or rejection. Eriksen’s book serves as a guide to help parents navigate these conversations and provide the support their children need.

She also highlights the significance of parents and caregivers affirming their love for their LGBTQIA+ child. Parents can help their children build a strong sense of self-worth and confidence by openly expressing love and acceptance. This affirmation is vital to children’s emotional well-being and helps them navigate challenges outside the home.

Public spaces can sometimes be challenging for LGBTQIA+ children, as they may encounter discrimination or bullying. Eriksen discusses strategies for navigating these situations, including advocating for your child and building a support system. By teaching children how to assert themselves and providing them with a network of supportive individuals, parents can empower their children to face these challenges with resilience.
